What To Expect

What do I need to bring?

Bring a valid photo ID. You’ll be required to sign a waiver prior to participating in any classes. You must be 18 years old or older. If you’re under 18, you must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

What do I need to wear?

Wear a Gi if you have one. A gi is the standard uniform we wear in Jiu-Jitsu. You can pick up one at Amazon if you like. If you don’t have one, then wear a clean shirt and clean shorts. A loaner Gi will be provided to you (if available) for your 1st class. Gi’s vary in quality and cost. Optional equipment: ear guards, mouth guard, and an athletic cup.

What do I need to leave behind?

Check your ego and any preconceived notions of Jiu-Jitsu/fighting at the door.

What can I expect to learn from a class?

If you are new to the art, then you will not learn much from just 1 class, however, it should give you an idea of whether or not Jiu-Jitsu is right for you. Your 1st few weeks of instruction will cover the very basics and will involve little to no sparring.

If you have some level of experience, then you should be familiar with the format and should the instructor will gauge your skills and determine your level of participation.

What is the typical format for a class?

It’s about half an hour of warm-up exercises, followed by about an hour of instruction/drills, and we finish up with (at least) half an hour of sparring.
